People have been studying other people as long as people have been around. What have we discovered?

Historically, Greek philosopher Hippocrates incorporated different temperaments into his medical theories, suggesting that four bodily fluids affect personality traits and behaviours. He called these fluids “humours” and identified them as black bile, yellow bile, phlegm and blood. Sickness resulted when you had too much of one of these “humours” in your system. (Not sure I’d want to start draining blood to help cure a sickness!)

Fast forward a few thousand years, and we are still trying to figure out what makes people tick. Author Florence Littauer has done a great job of helping us understand the four distinctly different personality types. I highly recommend you get a copy of her book to help you understand yourself and start mastering your understanding of those around you.

Sanguines, known as the “Popular” type, enjoy anything fun. A Sanguine gets along well with people and gets others excited, but cannot always be relied upon to get things done.

Known as the “Perfect” type, Melancholies spend their days and nights thinking, assessing, making lists, evaluating positives and negatives and general analysis of facts. As you can see, a melancholies work is never done.

Laid back, nonchalant, unexcitable and relaxed, Phlegmatics desire a quiet and peaceful environment above all else. Known as the “Peaceful” type, they tend to want everyone to get along, and rocking the boat is never their objective.

Cholerics are dominant, “Powerful,” strong, stubborn and at times borderline arrogant.  Always having the answers, they know what to do, make quick decisions and can bail others out in a jam. Despite their “got it all together” personality, they struggle with being popular as their assurance and assertiveness makes others feel insecure.

One thing is obvious: personalities are predictable. With practice, you can start to recognize the patterns in people’s personalities, understand others and relate to people in a more positive and understanding way.
